Professional
Training and Experience in the United Kingdom
I work as a consultant psychiatrist in UK
since May 1997
Between 1995 and 1997 I was a clinical
Research Fellow in the Department of Psychiatry, Edinburgh University.
I
was the responsible investigator in a project titled “Compliance with
Maintenance Neuroleptics and Relapse Rate in Schizophrenia” supervised by Professor Eve
Johnstone and Dr David Owens, Senior Lecturer. The project involved a study on
Schizophrenia and compliance with neuroleptic medication and its correlation
with insight and side effects. The aim was to investigate the factors
responsible for frequent relapse and to assess an educational package to reduce
relapse rates in schizophrenic patients.
Between April 1990 till
31 January 1995 I took part in a Psychiatric Rotational Training Scheme at
South Essex. The Training Covered a wide experience in all Psychiatric
Subspecialties including Old Age Psychiatry, Alcohol & Drug Abuse, General
Adult Psychiatry, Psychotherapy, Learning Disability, Forensic Psychiatry,
Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Liaision Psychiatry.
I started my basic psychiatric training in 1978 by
joining the Rotating Psychiatric Residency Scheme in Abbassia Psychiatric
Hospital. This is the largest psychiatric hospital in Cairo, which was
established more than a century ago. The Rotating Psychiatric Residency Scheme
is divided into six months in each of the following units: Acute Admission
unit, Medium Stay unit, Long Stay Unit, Psychogeriatric units, Addiction unit
and Child and Adolescent units. I took part in the weekly case conference and
teaching seminars. I attended half-day release courses in the Department of
Psychiatry, Al-Azhar University in preparation for Master degree in Neuropsychiatry. The
experience in Egypt was recognised by the Dean of the Royal College of
Psychiatrists as sufficient for the purpose of sitting Part I of the
M.R.C.Psych. examination.
After obtaining my Master Degree in
NeuroPsychiatry , I worked as a specialist From Dec. 1982 to Jan. 1985 at
Helwan Psychiatric Hospital in Cairo. This is a modern state psychiatric
hospital at a suburb of Cairo with a 300-bed capacity. There is a close liaison
with the 2-mile far Helwan General Hospital.
Experience in Saudi Arabia :
From 1985 to 1990, I worked
at Erfan General Hospital at Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. This is a large modern 500
bedded private general hospital. The Department of Psychiatry includes 35
bedded in-patient unit and a large outpatient clinic attended by four
consultants daily and established liaison service. Consultant staff is
recruited from British-trained psychiatrists or Egyptian Universities
Professors. The hospital provides such advanced investigative facilities as CT
Scanning, Brain Evoked Potential and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Scanner (MRI).
EXPERIENCE IN INDIVIDUAL AND GROUP
PSYCHODYNAMICS
1974-1985
As a medical student, I was introduced to
Psychiatry in 1974 through attending seminars on group and individual
psychotherapy held in Cairo University Medical School by Professor Y. Rakhaway
(Head of Department of Psychiatry, Cairo University) and Professor M. Shaalan
(Head of Department of Psychiatry, AL-Azhar University, Cairo).
Between 1974 and 1985 I took part in different
training groups in dynamic psychotherapy. These were based on different
psychodynamic and group techniques. I also participated in training workshops
in group dynamics, inter-personal interactions and conflict resolution in
groups. Between 1980 and 1985 I practised individual and group psychotherapy
first under supervision of Professor M. Shaalan, and later independently.
This experience gave me wide-based knowledge
of psychodynamic and interpersonal psychotherapy, group and institutional
processes and sufficient self-knowledge to avoid imposing personal solutions to
life problems of patients. It allowed me to recognise personal limitations and
make use of available supervision.
From 1980 to 1985, I was an active member of
the Egyptian Scientific Society for Group Training (President: Professor
M. Shaalan). This is a scientific body for research and training in
group dynamics, group psychotherapy, encounter groups and community development.
My activities in the Society included:
1) Trainer in group dynamics, human
communication and interactions for the new members of the ESSGT (Psychology and
medical students) and for employees of governmental and private companies.
2) I held seminars for the members about
group dynamics.
3) Secretary and member of the Board of
Directors for 3 years (1981 - 1984).
4) Research team member in a project that
included an epidemiological study
of psychiatric morbidity in an Egyptian
rural community and promotion of health
awareness through group interaction approach and direct contact with the
community population.
6) I published a teaching Book in Arabic to
the Group Members titled : Introduction to Therapeutic Groups.
S. FATTAH: INTRODUCTION TO
THERAPEUTIC GROUPS,( In Arabic ), ESSGT, 1984, CAIRO
This book surveys the different schools of
group psychotherapy, the new trends in
group training and encounter groups, with a brief outline of group dynamics and
analysis of the group process.

group.
